Poker is a card game that can be played against other players, strangers or friends. Traditionally it has involved betting, but there is also a lot of skill involved in making good decisions.
When a player wants to put more money into the pot they can say ‘raise’, which means that the other players must call their new bet or fold. They can also choose to raise their own bet, which is called a ‘re-raise’ (although this will usually cost them more than calling the original high bet).
Generally speaking, it is best to play strong hands, especially in early position, because it can force weaker hands out of the hand. This will help you to win the most money in the long run. Don’t be afraid to bluff, however, because good bluffs can often turn a bad hand into a great one.
The game is started by giving everyone two cards face down. Once the cards are dealt, the betting starts. You can say hit if you want another card, stay if you are happy with your value, or double up if you have a high value hand, such as two 3s.
The dealer will then reveal five community cards that anyone can use to make a poker hand of five. The person with the strongest five-card poker hand wins the pot. In the event of a tie, the pot is split. If a player has blackjack, they win the pot.
